The Silent Treatment Anti-Snoring Device
The Silent Treatment is a boil-and-bite device. Unlike most such devices, however, it does not force the lower jaw forward; these can place a strain on the jaw.
The Silent Treatment is held in place by an impression of the side teeth only. The teeth keep it in place as its tongue pad presses on the upper surface of the tongue.
The tongue pad is covered with tiny spurs. These spurs are designed to link up with the papillae on the tongue, much as the hooks and loops of Velcro link up. The tongue is thus held in place.
One additional benefit of The Silent Treatment is its reliance on muscle memory. It acts as a trainer for the tongue muscle. The muscle ends up “remembering” the position it’s been trained to adopt during sleep, and after a while, you will only need to use it once a week to help retain that memory.
The design of The Silent Treatment is unique. It uses the impression of the teeth as a key part of the design but does not also force the jaw into another position. It is covered both as an international trademark, and a New Zealand patent application is pending.
Tongue trainer mouthpiece device for the control of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.
The underside of this oral appliance is covered in hundreds of tiny spurs. These spurs are shaped, spaced and angled to precisely mesh with the papillae. This keeps your tongue in the flattened, forward position that it stays in when you are awake, but because there are so many of them there is no harm or discomfort. It's rather like Velcro. One hook and loop pair on its own would do nothing but hundreds of them working together is amazingly effective. The tendency for your tongue to rise as it relaxes keeps enough gentle pressure on the spurs to maintain the engagement throughout the night. And after a few nights of using your snoring mouthpiece, the phenomenon known as muscle memory will kick in.Your tongue is a muscle, and it will remember the position it has been staying in while you sleep and you will find you only need to use the device for a few hours a week, just to keep the memory active.
To fit it to your mouth, you will need to boil and bite your dental device. The bulbs on the sides are made of a special material which will soften in boiling water enough for you to bite them into the shape of your teeth. When it has cooled down, and you want to use it, you simply pop it into your mouth, putting your tongue in a comfortable, forward position to engage with the spurs.
This Sleep Apnea mouthpiece device and snoring solution will comfortably hold the tongue in its normal awake position, while at the same time holding the lower jaw in its correct and natural position. These two actions effectively combine to comfortably and harmlessly prevent the tongue from drifting back to block the airway.
How to use your Silent Treatment Anti-Snoring Device?
Place in position, leaving your tongue in its normal, awake position, (or slightly forward of it) so that the spurred surface gently grips your tongue when you close your jaws together onto the Silent Treatment Device.
Once the upper surfaces of the side bulbs are engaged with your upper teeth and your tongue is comfortably meshed with the underside of the Silent Treatment Device, you can relax your lower jaw if desired. Your tongue will gently press on the underside of the Silent Treatment, maintaining the engagements required to prevent your tongue moving back. If this does not happen for you, please see note 3.
Note 1a. Boiling the Silent Treatment Device again will return the side bulbs close to their original shape. Try the Silent Treatment fitted as described. If the front edge of the spurred surface digs in to your tongue it needs to go further back. If the back edge digs in it needs to come forward. You can mould again to achieve the perfect fit for your mouth, keeping in mind that there should be no strain or discomfort.
Note 1b. Add salt to the water if you are not getting the teeth impressions deep enough.
Note 2: It is perfectly natural and normal that your mouth will react to having a foreign object in it. It will initially produce more saliva and this, coupled with the action of swallowing being made a bit more awkward with your tongue being restrained, will make it all feel a bit weird. Sleeping on your side instead of your back will help with this, in fact, always sleeping on your side is highly recommended.
Also helpful for:
Hold the Silent Treatment Device in your mouth during the evening before going to bed.
Consciously think about something else while drifting off to sleep.
So while all this may mean it takes you longer to fall asleep for the first night or two, by the third night your mouth should be completely accustomed to it so you will hardly know it is there.
Note 3: If you find that your lower jaw dropping away does result in disengagement of the Silent Treatment with your upper teeth, or your tongue with the Silent Treatment Device, you may need a chinstrap.
